Denmark population register suffers massive data breach
Denmark's Ministry of Research, Education and Digitalization has announced a massive data breach involving the national population register. Unauthorized actors successfully stole the names, addresses, and identification numbers of approximately 8.8 million individuals.
The stolen data includes information on living, deceased, and emigrated Danish citizens. The breach compromised nearly the entire register, which contains 11 million total entries. The attackers reportedly gained access by exploiting the legitimate credentials of a company that had authorized access to the registry.
While the full consequences of the leak are still being assessed, the incident poses significant security risks. Given the geopolitical climate and potential threats from Russia, the exposure of such sensitive national data is viewed as a serious matter for citizen security.
