Denmark presents 2027 budget with defense and tax reforms
The Danish government has presented its 2027 budget proposal, prioritizing national security, defense, and tax reforms. A central pillar of the plan is a commitment to increase defense spending to 3.5 percent of GDP by 2030.
Taxation changes include the proposed abolition of the middle tax and the top-top tax, alongside a reduction in corporate tax. To fund these measures and other priorities, the government proposes new taxes, such as a levy on cruise ships, and cost increases for electric vehicles priced above 366,000 DKK from 2027.
The budget also introduces significant shifts in social welfare. While the monthly benefit for the early retirement scheme (Arne-pension) is set to increase by over 3,000 DKK starting January 2027, the government plans to tighten requirements for the senior pension. This new approach would assess work capacity against the entire labor market rather than just the most recent job, a move that has drawn criticism from labor organizations like FH and BUPL.
Other key allocations include 1.2 billion DKK for the child and school sector in 2027. However, the proposal faces pushback regarding cuts to student grants (SU) and concerns from the real estate sector and health innovation groups about insufficient long-term investment in housing and medical research.
