Denmark proposes new legislation for public sector AI use

The Danish government has introduced a new legislative proposal to facilitate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) systems for processing personal data within the public sector. The Ministry of Higher Education and Science has submitted this updated draft to enable the rapid deployment and scaling of AI in government operations.

Despite improvements made since a previous proposal, the Data Ethics Council has raised concerns regarding the bill. Johan Busse, chairman of the Data Ethics Council, noted that there are ‘clear data ethical concerns’ and criticized the breadth of the legal authority provided by the proposal. Additionally, legal experts have pointed out that the transition between different sectors of legislation remains insufficiently addressed.
