Denmark proposes total ban on mobile phones in schools

The Danish government has announced a proposal for a total ban on mobile phones and other private screen devices in both public and independent primary and secondary schools. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that the ban would cover classrooms as well as schoolyards and breaks. This initiative follows the release of the latest PISA results, which showed a significant decline in Danish students' performance in reading, mathematics, and science, with scores falling below the European average.

Education Minister Magnus Heunicke explained that the plan may involve students handing in their devices at the start of the school day and retrieving them upon dismissal. Exceptions will be made for medical necessities, such as glucose monitoring for diabetic students. Additionally, the government is moving toward banning social media use for children under the age of 15.

Academic leaders, including Tomas Kepler of Akademikerne, have supported the move, warning that the decline in educational standards poses a long-term threat to Denmark’s knowledge-based economy and future workforce.
