Denmark raises cyberattack threat level amid Russian sabotage risks

The Danish Agency for Social Security has raised the threat level for destructive cyberattacks against Denmark from medium to high. Intelligence from the Danish Defence Intelligence Service and the Police Intelligence Service indicates an increased willingness by Russia to engage in sabotage targeting Denmark and other NATO countries.

The anticipated attacks are expected to occur in October and include two primary methods: wiper attacks, which aim to delete or overwrite data, and the manipulation of operational technology (OT) to disrupt physical systems such as heating plants, pumps, and production lines. These actions could cause physical damage to critical infrastructure and indirectly affect citizens through disruptions in energy, communication, or healthcare systems.

In a related development, an analysis of 280 Danish defense companies conducted by the IT firm Auroa reveals significant security vulnerabilities. The study indicates that many companies within the defense industry, including suppliers and software providers, lack basic IT protections. Experts warn that these security gaps could be exploited by Russia as part of hybrid warfare and sabotage planning.
