Denmark Says NATO Article 5 Extends to Greenland at Ankara Summit

At the NATO summit in Ankara, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen declared that Denmark is prepared to defend every centimetre of NATO territory, including Greenland, stating that “Article 5 also applies there”. She emphasised that Denmark, as a sovereign state, expects its sovereignty to be respected following remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Finland’s president highlighted the Arctic expertise of seven NATO members, while Luxembourg and Canada led discussions on creating a multilateral defence bank to mobilise public and private capital for re‑arming allies, potentially supporting heavily indebted states such as Italy and Greece. NATO Secretary‑General Mark Rutte reiterated that Russia remains a long‑term threat to the alliance.
