Denmark to boost animal welfare inspections after massive oversight failure

Danish Justice Minister Nicolai Wammen has announced an emergency package to strengthen animal welfare inspections following revelations of significant regulatory failures. An audit by the Ministry of Justice revealed that approximately 1,500 follow-up animal welfare inspections scheduled between 2025 and the first half of 2026 were not conducted. Additionally, several follow-up inspections from previous years remain uncompleted.

The shortfall follows criticism from state auditors regarding the oversight of pig welfare, noting that inadequate inspections increase the risk of undetected animal cruelty. Wammen stated that the current situation is ‘not good enough’ and promised to dedicate more resources to inspections and increase sanctions for owners who fail to care for their animals properly.

Animal welfare organization Dyrenes Beskyttelse described the situation as an ‘egregious failure’ and a ‘deeply, deeply shocking’ neglect of animal protection. The organization criticized previous government approaches, noting that the failure to meet inspection targets also constitutes a breach of the 2024 ‘Together for the Animals’ political agreement.
