Denmark to debate suspending Spain from Schengen over Ceuta migrant surge

On 12 August, the Danish Parliament was urgently convened to discuss the recent influx of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Since the end of July, roughly 60,000 people have crossed from Morocco into Ceuta, prompting right‑wing parties to demand that Denmark push for Spain’s suspension from the Schengen free‑movement area.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Immigration Minister Morten Bødskov are to answer questions about whether the government will support a suspension, echoing the prime minister’s earlier statement that “Vi kommer ikke til at acceptere en gentagelse af 2015.” The EU Commission is expected to present proposals in October, though current Schengen rules only allow temporary border controls, not outright exclusion of a member state.
