Denmark to phase out mink farming by 2029

The Danish government has decided not to seek an exemption from an upcoming EU-wide ban on mink farming, effectively ensuring the industry will be completely phased out by August 2029. This decision follows the EU's classification of the mink as an invasive species, which triggers a general ban on mink keeping starting August 7, 2027, followed by a two-year transition period.

Minister for Nature and Animal Welfare Christian Rabjerg Madsen stated that the government chose animal welfare over maintaining a long-standing industry, noting that a sector should not exist solely due to its history but must also be meaningful for society, the economy, and the animals.

The industry has seen a massive decline since the COVID-19 pandemic, when the previous administration ordered the culling of over 15 million mink due to virus mutation concerns—a move that later faced legal challenges regarding its basis. Since the industry was partially allowed to resume in 2023, it has shrunk significantly, with only seven mink farms currently operating in Denmark.
