Denmark to increase early retirement benefits and adjust age limits

The Danish government has announced significant changes to the early retirement scheme, commonly known as the ‘Arne pension’. Starting January 1, 2027, the monthly benefit is set to increase by 3,095 DKK, raising the payment from 15,650 DKK to 18,745 DKK (at 2026 levels). These improvements will apply to both current recipients and future retirees.

Additionally, the government plans to maintain the retirement age at 64 for those born in 1963, 1964, and 1965, preventing a scheduled increase to 65. Requirements for seniority are also being eased, allowing individuals with 41 years of labor market experience to qualify for one year of early retirement. The government anticipates these changes will encourage approximately 7,400 more people to opt for early retirement by 2030.

In a related discussion regarding labor market sustainability, academic unions are calling for increased political action to address psychological working environments. They emphasize that a healthy economy requires a workforce capable of long-term employment, urging the government to set specific targets to reduce work-related stress by at least 20 percent by 2035 to prevent premature exit from the labor market.
