Denmark to introduce 15-year age limit for social media

The Danish government and several political parties have reached an agreement to introduce a national age limit of 15 for accessing social media. The plan is intended to take effect on July 1, 2027, with a formal legislative proposal expected to be introduced in early 2027.

Minister for Research, Education, and Digitalization Christina Egelund stated that the initiative aims to protect children from harmful content, digital harassment, and addictive algorithms. The proposal is part of a broader digital child protection agreement that includes 160 million kroner allocated for the period between 2026 and 2029.

Data supporting the measure indicates that a vast majority of children under 13 possess social media profiles. Furthermore, approximately 69 percent of 9-to-17-year-olds in Denmark reported experiencing at least one digital violation or unpleasant online experience in the past year.
