Denmark challenges Spain’s migrant regularization plan at EU summit

During an EU summit in Brussels, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called on the European Commission to investigate Spain’s plan to regularize the status of approximately 600,000 irregular migrants. Frederiksen argued that Spain’s approach contradicts the migration policies supported by the majority of European nations and warned that such measures could act as a ‘pull factor’ for further irregular migration.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez defended the policy, which was established via a decree to provide legal status to undocumented residents. Sánchez described the initiative as a model based on human rights, integration, and social cohesion that is compatible with economic growth.

The disagreement highlights a growing divide within the European Union regarding migration management. While Spain pursues regularization, other leaders, including those from Denmark, Italy, and Poland, have advocated for stricter border controls and more ambitious language in summit conclusions to discourage irregular arrivals.
