Denmark vegetable production relocation proposed to protect marine environments

Marine environment professor Stiig Markager suggests that parts of Denmark’s vegetable production, specifically in areas like Samsø and Lammefjorden, should be moved further inland to protect marine environments.

The proposal is driven by concerns over nitrogen runoff. Because vegetable cultivation requires high levels of nitrogen, current production sites in coastal areas risk allowing significant amounts of these nutrients to enter fjords and bays. Moving production to inland fields could ensure more nitrogen is retained in the soil.

Local producers have expressed strong opposition to the idea. Farmers argue that decades of expertise, specialized irrigation systems, and local infrastructure are tied to these specific regions. There are also concerns regarding the economic impact on local communities, particularly on Samsø, where agriculture is a vital source of employment and activity.
