Denmark water and waste management developments
Several environmental and infrastructure issues are emerging across Denmark. In Skovlunde, the utility company Novafos reported unexpectedly low water levels in the Skovlunde Gadekær basin following a major cleaning and emptying process earlier this year. Project manager Søren Rønn Ryby attributed the slow recovery to several months of dry weather and a limited catchment area consisting primarily of residential surfaces rather than large industrial rooftops.
In Southern Jutland, Aabenraa is centralizing wastewater treatment to better control nitrogen and phosphorus discharges. This move aims to reduce the amount of Danish wastewater sent to Flensburg, Germany, thereby protecting the heavily burdened Flensburg Fjord.
In Copenhagen, the restaurant and cafe industry has expressed concern regarding the Copenhagen Municipality's decision to phase out the vacuum waste suction system in Nyhavn by 2030. Industry representatives fear that without a replacement plan, the popular waterfront area could become cluttered with waste containers.
