Denmark youth leisure: Study shows social trends and new inclusion projects

organized leisure child well-being social inclusion youth studies Denmark

A new study by the Mary Fonden and the Center for Youth Studies (CUR) reveals that 90% of children in grades 3 to 6 in Denmark participate regularly in organized leisure activities. The findings indicate that 95% of these children look forward to their activities, primarily because they find them enjoyable.

The research highlights a shift in social motivation: 75% of children now cite being with existing friends as a primary reason for participating, rather than seeking out new acquaintances. Experts note that while this is not inherently alarming, it places a responsibility on instructors to implement social exercises to prevent friend groups from becoming closed off to others.

In a separate local initiative, Jammerbugt Municipality has launched 'Fritidsmissionen' in the Aabybro and Birkelse areas. With a budget of approximately 2 million DKK, the project aims to ensure all children aged 6 to 15 have access to leisure communities between 2026 and 2028. The project has already begun baseline measurements at three local schools to track progress in social inclusion.
