Denmark's electric car boom threatened by tax hike after 97% private adoption

In July 2024, 97 % of new private cars registered in Denmark were electric, with 11,672 of the 14,562 new passenger cars being battery‑electric. Overall, electric vehicles accounted for 80.2 % of all new registrations. Mobility Denmark warned that a planned increase in the registration tax for electric cars – rising from 40 % in 2026 to 48 % in 2027 and 56 % in 2028 – could slow the rapid market growth just as the country approaches Norway’s level of electric‑car penetration.

The Danish government, together with the Conservative People's Party, has delayed the tax rise to 2027, but the change is still expected after the new year. Mobility Denmark’s director Mads Rørvig said the sector expects one million electric cars on Danish roads by 2027, a milestone for meeting climate targets. The upcoming parliamentary session will address whether to keep, increase, or abolish the electric‑vehicle registration tax, making the issue a central political decision.
