Dennis Gates addresses Mark Mitchell and CJ Gunn eligibility battles
University of Missouri basketball head coach Dennis Gates addressed the ongoing eligibility battles of players Mark Mitchell and CJ Gunn during the team's recent Pro Day. Both players are currently seeking to play a fifth season for the Tigers during the 2026-27 campaign, but they are presently ineligible.
To participate, Mitchell and Gunn must secure preliminary injunctions and temporary restraining orders through the court system. Mitchell previously had an injunction granted in Kentucky, but a judge later dissolved it, leaving his status for the upcoming season uncertain. His legal team is reportedly seeking another hearing.
Coach Gates emphasized his commitment to supporting the student-athletes through their legal appeals and processes. He noted that the decision to bring both players into the program was based on their fit with the team culture and their talent. The players had previously explored professional opportunities, including the NBA Summer League and the Canadian Elite Basketball League, before the possibility of further collegiate eligibility emerged.
