Denny Hamlin Takes NASCAR 2026 Regular-Season Lead from Tyler Reddick

Tyler Reddick opened the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series with a dominant run, securing three consecutive victories and five wins in the first 14 races, building a lead of more than 120 points. A series of mechanical failures – including a splitter change, tire failure, power‑steering issues and oil‑cooler punctures – caused four DNFs in five races, dropping him from the top spot.

Denny Hamlin capitalized on Reddick’s setbacks, winning at Michigan and Pocono to claim the regular‑season points lead with seven races remaining. Hamlin emphasized his focus on race wins rather than the standings, noting the playoff points reset will give the regular‑season champion a modest advantage. Veteran driver Kyle Petty warned that Hamlin’s current form could fade quickly, drawing a parallel to Tony Stewart’s 2011 surge before the Chase.
