DENSO launches blockchain battery passport service for EU compliance

DENSO Corporation has launched the ‘DENSO Digital Product Passport Solution for Battery’, a service designed to help automakers and battery manufacturers comply with upcoming European regulations. The service utilizes blockchain technology to ensure data reliability and prevent tampering, facilitating the digital management of battery information.

The European Battery Regulation will mandate the use of battery passports starting February 18, 2027, for electric vehicle batteries, light transport batteries, and industrial batteries with a capacity exceeding 2kWh. DENSO’s solution follows the data model established by the European Battery Pass-Ready consortium, allowing businesses to collect data from suppliers and systems while enabling users to access information via QR codes.

The platform includes access control features to manage information visibility for different user types, such as consumers and economic operators. DENSO intends to expand this service to support other Digital Product Passports required under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR).
