Dental assistant shortages persist in US and Europe
A shortage of dental assistants is a persistent issue in the United States and several European countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Slovenia, Slovakia, and Bulgaria. While recruitment is a challenge, retaining skilled staff requires more than just filling vacancies.
Data from DrBicuspid.com indicates that 47% of surveyed dental assistants in the US are considering changing jobs within the next two years. Among those contemplating a move, 84% cite higher compensation as a primary reason. However, job satisfaction is driven by a combination of factors beyond salary, including a positive work atmosphere, opportunities for professional development and promotion, effective communication, work-life balance, and feeling respected by employers.
To combat turnover, dental practices are encouraged to create clear career advancement paths. The role of a dental assistant is evolving beyond basic clinical support, such as sterilization and instrument handling, to include clinical competencies, patient education, and team organization.
