Dental experts advise on optimal timing for brushing teeth
Dental experts suggest that brushing teeth immediately after breakfast may be detrimental to tooth enamel. According to dentist Dr. Deepa Chopra, common breakfast items such as fruit, orange juice, and coffee can lower the pH level in the mouth, temporarily softening the enamel.
Because enamel is the hardest tissue in the human body but cannot be regenerated once worn down, experts recommend brushing immediately upon waking to remove bacteria and plaque accumulated overnight. This allows fluoride to protect the teeth before consuming acidic foods.
If brushing after a meal is preferred, dentists such as Madeline Seylo, Dr. Henry Hackney, and Dr. Jess Sagu advise waiting approximately 30 minutes. This delay allows saliva to neutralize oral acidity and helps the enamel recover. For immediate freshness after eating, rinsing with water is suggested as a safer alternative.
