Dental health advice regarding brushing teeth before or after breakfast
Dentists generally recommend brushing teeth before breakfast to remove plaque that accumulates overnight and to apply a fluoride layer that protects enamel from acids and sugars found in morning meals. This routine also helps reduce morning bad breath by eliminating bacteria.
While brushing after breakfast is possible, it is advised to wait at least 30 minutes after eating. Brushing immediately after consuming acidic foods or drinks can contribute to enamel erosion, as acid temporarily softens the tooth surface. Waiting allows saliva to neutralize acids and begin the remineralization process.
