Dental hygiene and factors affecting tooth color

Routine brushing does not always result in whiter teeth, as natural tooth color and surface stains play significant roles. According to the Ministry of Health, beverages such as coffee and tea are common contributors to surface staining.

Beyond external stains, the internal structure of the tooth affects its appearance. The enamel, the outermost layer, is somewhat transparent, allowing the yellowish color of the underlying dentin to show through. The interaction between enamel, dentin, and light further influences the visible color.

Several methods exist to address tooth discoloration. Stain removal focuses on cleaning surface pigments, while bleaching uses substances like hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to break down discoloring compounds. Other approaches include optical whitening, which uses color correction principles to visually reduce yellowness without chemical reactions, and the use of enzymes like papain to help break down protein layers where pigments often adhere.
