Dental Hygienists emphasize link between oral and general health
On National Dental Hygienist Day, the National Commission of the Dental Hygienists' Register emphasized the critical link between oral health and overall bodily well-being. The Commission highlighted that investing in oral prevention is essential for both individual wellness and the sustainability of the healthcare system.
According to the World Health Organization, oral diseases affect nearly 3.7 billion people globally. Furthermore, the 2021 Global Burden of Disease report identified untreated caries in permanent teeth as the most prevalent health condition worldwide.
Caterina Di Marco, president of the National Commission, noted that a healthy mouth is vital for basic functions such as eating, speaking, and socializing without pain. As populations age and chronic diseases increase, the role of university-trained dental hygienists becomes increasingly strategic in assessing disease risk, early detection, and promoting healthy lifestyles.
