Dental implants require long-term care to prevent inflammation and failure
Medical professionals are warning that dental implants require rigorous long-term maintenance to prevent serious complications. Clinical data indicates that without proper care and regular follow-ups, approximately 50% of patients experience gum inflammation after 10 years, with nearly 20% developing severe issues such as bone loss.
Dr. Hu Gang-shuo of Shin Kong Hospital identified five major risk factors for peri-implantitis and implant failure: smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, pre-existing periodontal disease, poor oral hygiene, and a lack of regular dental check-ups. In one reported case, a patient experienced severe inflammation and implant breakage after a decade due to inadequate maintenance.
To reduce risks, experts recommend completing periodontal treatment before receiving implants, avoiding extremely hard foods like bones or hard nuts, and maintaining detailed records of implant brands and models to ensure compatibility for future dental work.
