Dental professionals warn of risks in aesthetic trends

Dental professionals are warning against the risks associated with popular aesthetic trends, including dental jewelry and unsupervised teeth whitening.

Regarding dental jewelry, Phebe Valenzuela from Universidad Andrés Bello notes that while the procedure can be safe when performed by dentists using certified materials, significant risks arise when done in beauty salons or jewelry stores. Improper techniques or non-biocompatible materials can lead to enamel damage, gum inflammation, cavities, and accidental ingestion of the jewelry. The procedure is contraindicated for individuals with active cavities, periodontal disease, or severe bruxism.

Similarly, the General Council of Dentists warns that teeth whitening should be treated as a medical process rather than a routine cosmetic one. In the European Union, over-the-counter products are limited to 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, while concentrations between 0.1% and 6% require professional supervision. Using products with concentrations exceeding 6% without dental oversight can cause tooth sensitivity, gingival irritation, and significant tissue damage.
