UK dental sector faces staffing shortages due to visa restrictions
British dental practices are experiencing significant recruitment challenges following changes to visa regulations. Data from the UK Home Ministry indicates that work visas granted to dental nurses have plummeted by 95% compared to the three quarters preceding the policy shift.
The restrictions, which took effect on July 22, 2025, were driven by an increase in the required qualification level for Skilled Worker visas to RQF 6, a level roughly equivalent to a university degree. Because the role of dental nurse does not meet this new threshold, employers can no longer sponsor new international staff for these positions. Similar limitations have also impacted dental hygienists and dental technicians.
