Dental veneers: key considerations for aesthetic oral health

Dental veneers are an aesthetic choice used to correct permanent stains, chips, gaps, and uneven tooth sizes. While they can significantly improve a smile, medical professionals emphasize that oral health must be prioritized before any cosmetic procedure. This includes treating active cavities, gum inflammation, and assessing the bite to prevent damage from conditions like bruxism.

There are two primary materials used for veneers: porcelain and composite resin. Porcelain is noted for its natural appearance, resistance to staining from substances like coffee, and long-term durability. Composite resin is a more affordable option but is more prone to chipping, staining, and tartar buildup, which can lead to cavities underneath the veneer.

The procedure typically involves multiple dental visits, including oral health checks, enamel preparation, and impressions for laboratory fabrication. Patients should be aware that veneers are not permanent and generally require replacement every 7 to 10 years. Additionally, the necessity of enamel grinding varies by patient and should be discussed with a dentist to avoid unnatural results.
