Dentist Aydan Gürcan cautions that only professional tooth‑whitening methods are safe
Dentist Aydan Gürcan explains that tooth‑whitening (bleaching) works by using hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to chemically oxidise pigment molecules in the tooth structure, producing a brighter appearance while preserving the natural enamel. She says two scientifically proven professional methods exist. The in‑office approach uses high‑concentration agents in 15–20‑minute sessions, typically completed in two to three visits, and may cause mild sensitivity for up to 24 hours.
The at‑home method involves custom‑made transparent trays applied for 2–8 hours daily or overnight for one to two weeks, offering lower sensitivity risk but a more limited shade change. Gürcan stresses that both procedures are safe only under dentist supervision; unsupervised over‑the‑counter or DIY products can lead to irreversible damage to teeth and gums.
