Dentist Lilia Espinoza detained in Sol Chávez case

Lilia Espinoza, a 60-year-old dentist, has been detained after presenting herself to the 13th Police Station in Asunción to serve a four-year prison sentence. Espinoza was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of María Sol Chávez, who died in April 2021 due to fluoride intoxication.

The investigation determined that the victim consumed a medication prescribed by Espinoza that contained an excessive amount of fluoride. Pharmaceutical chemist Sandra Hermosa was also sentenced to three years in prison for authorizing the production of capsules containing 500-milligram doses.

Judge Luz Rossana Bogarín recently revoked alternative measures to imprisonment for Espinoza, leading to the current detention following the definitive sentence.
