Dentists warn against common electric toothbrushing mistakes

Dentists are warning that improper use of electric toothbrushes can lead to oral health issues despite the device's ability to remove plaque more effectively than manual brushing. Common errors include applying excessive pressure and using incorrect angles.

Nigel Carter of the Oral Health Foundation warns that pressing too hard against teeth can wear down protective enamel, causing sensitivity, and can lead to irreversible gum recession. Conversely, applying too little pressure may prevent sonic bristles from cleaning plaque effectively.

Users are advised to hold the brush at an appropriate angle and allow the device to remain on each tooth surface for two to three seconds to ensure thorough cleaning. Utilizing pressure sensors, if available, can help prevent mechanical overload.
