Denuvo updates hypervisor detection as Tomb Raider protection is removed
The anti-piracy software Denuvo has implemented new technical mechanisms to identify activities within hypervisors. By detecting logical inconsistencies between CPUID responses and actual processor behavior—specifically regarding the RDRAND instruction—the system can recognize artificial virtual environments. If a discrepancy is found between declared capabilities and actual execution, the software triggers an immediate crash.
In a separate development, the SteamDB database indicates that the Denuvo entry has been removed from the listing for 'Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis' approximately four months before its scheduled release on February 12, 2027. While it is common for studios to remove such protections after the initial sales window, this removal occurs unusually early. Neither the developer, Crystal Dynamics, nor the publisher, Amazon Game Studios, have commented on the change.
