Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper returns to training camp amid domestic violence case

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper, 28, was arrested twice in June on domestic‑violence related charges, including a second‑degree assault by strangulation felony and three misdemeanors. He was excused from the team’s mandatory minicamp but returned to practice as the Broncos began their summer acclimation workouts.

Head coach Sean Payton said the organization is “staying the course” with league and club protocols, stressing that the team is supportive yet aware of the seriousness of the matter. Cooper completed a month‑and‑a‑half inpatient counseling program and remained in close contact with owner Greg Penner, general manager George Paton and the coaching staff.

The NFL is reviewing the case and Cooper could face a suspension of up to six games under the league’s personal‑conduct policy. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 31. Cooper has started every game for Denver over the past three seasons, playing in 81 games with eight sacks and 50 tackles last season.
