Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix on track for minicamp as team eyes flexible contract options

Quarterback Bo Nix, the Denver Broncos’ 2024 first‑round pick, is progressing in his recovery from a fractured right ankle suffered in the divisional‑round playoff win over the Buffalo Bills on Jan. 17. After surgery and a follow‑up procedure in April, he attended the first three days of voluntary OTAs but did not practice. Head coach Sean Payton said of Nix’s rehab, “It’s good. You don’t see the pre‑practice, but he’s been throwing,” and expects Nix to participate in mandatory minicamp from June 16‑18, with a full‑go outlook for training camp.

At the same time, the Broncos’ front office is leveraging salary‑cap flexibility created by a new four‑year, $96 million contract for All‑Pro cornerback Pat Surtain II. The deal, which includes up to $10 million in guarantees, leaves the team “more than $25 million under the salary cap,” according to the Denver Post. General manager George Paton’s use of option bonuses and other mechanisms positions Denver to potentially sign a “mega‑contract” for Nix in the coming years, as the organization builds around the young quarterback for the long term.
