Denver police shooting: Venezuelan national Wilson Guerra dies

Wilson Guerra, a 26-year-old Venezuelan national, has died following a police shooting in Denver, Colorado. Guerra succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, nearly two months after being hospitalized following an encounter with a Denver Police officer on July 5.

Authorities stated that the officer discharged his weapon after Guerra allegedly approached him aggressively with a knife. Body camera footage shows Guerra appearing visibly agitated and holding what appeared to be a weapon before the shots were fired. Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas defended the officer's actions, stating the response to the threat was ‘appropriate.’

However, Guerra’s sister, Nairubis, has called for a deep investigation, alleging the use of lethal force was disproportionate. She noted that her brother suffered from mental health issues and argued that a language barrier, as Guerra did not speak English, may have complicated the interaction. She also expressed concerns regarding potential racism in the incident.
