Deoleo sale sparks debate over Spanish olive oil sovereignty

The potential sale of Deoleo, a major olive oil company with significant operations in Córdoba, Spain, has sparked debate regarding economic sovereignty and the control of strategic food assets. The company, which owns brands such as Carbonell and Hojiblanca, is currently the subject of several competing bids.

Reported offers include a €500 million proposal from the Italian family business Coricelli, a bid of approximately €500 million from Acesur, and a €470 million offer from the Andalusian cooperative Dcoop. Dcoop has expressed a strategy to defend the Spanish identity of the company against foreign acquisition.

Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, stated that while the government is monitoring the situation, it is a private sector operation that must follow European Union and Spanish market and competition rules. Planas noted that he would prefer a Spanish entity to acquire the firm to strengthen Spain’s international presence in the olive oil market, but he clarified that the government does not intend to interfere in the ongoing process or activate anti-takeover shields at this time.
