Golden Dome missile defense initiative targets 2028 operational date
The Pentagon is advancing its 'Golden Dome' missile defense initiative, a multi-layered architecture designed to protect the United States from ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missile threats. Gen. Michael Guetlein, the program manager, reported that approximately 90% of the $22.5 billion in congressional funding has been obligated. The program has already secured contracts for radars, space-based interceptors, and various operational sites.
Recent testing has shown promise, with Guetlein noting a recent hardware test where all airborne targets were intercepted within 34 minutes. The initiative is currently on track for an operational launch in the summer of 2028. To support development, the Department of Defense has launched the Golden Dome for America Ecosystem Hub, a digital portal intended to engage defense contractors, small businesses, and academic institutions in providing technologies ranging from artificial intelligence to electronic warfare.
Work has also commenced at Fort Story, Virginia, for the program's first operational site. The system is envisioned as a 'system of systems' that integrates land, sea, air, and space-based capabilities to counter sophisticated arsenals from near-peer adversaries and rogue states.
