Department of Justice faces scrutiny over political prosecutions

The U.S. Department of Justice is facing intense criticism regarding the integrity of its prosecutorial practices under the Trump administration. Critics argue the department has been utilized to pursue political retribution against perceived enemies, such as James Comey and Letitia James, while providing favorable treatment to political allies.

One specific case involves an attempted prosecution of former FBI Director James Comey. The government has alleged that an Instagram photo of seashells arranged to read ‘8647’ constituted a ‘true threat.’ In response to difficulties defining the term ‘86’ as a threat of violence, the DOJ has reportedly relied on AI prompts and references to Comey’s own 2025 novel to support its legal arguments. Comey is currently seeking to have the case dismissed and is attempting to hold the government accountable for what he characterizes as vindictive prosecution.
