Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools sued by DOJ over gender transition policies
The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a federal lawsuit against Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS), alleging the district facilitated gender transitions for students without notifying or obtaining consent from parents. The DOJ claims the district's policies violate the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA).
According to the complaint, KCKPS maintained internal guidance that allowed students to request that parents be excluded from meetings regarding their gender identity and social transition. The DOJ describes this as a ‘first-of-its-kind’ legal action intended to vindicate parental rights under these specific federal statutes.
KCKPS officials have disputed the allegations, stating the district is in compliance with federal law. They argued that the guidelines in question were not formally adopted or utilized as official board policy. The lawsuit follows an investigation by the Department of Education into several Kansas school districts regarding their handling of student gender identity information.
