Depeche Mode's musical evolution through the 1983 single ‘Get the Balance Right!’

The musical evolution of Depeche Mode during the early 1980s was marked by significant creative shifts and lineup changes. Following the departure of primary songwriter Vince Clarke after the success of ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’, Martin Gore assumed songwriting responsibilities with support from Daniel Miller of Mute Records.

The 1983 single ‘Get the Balance Right!’ served as a pivotal moment for the band, marking the official introduction of Alan Wilder as a member. The production involved experimentation with the advanced Synclavier sampler, despite technical difficulties in the studio.

Despite its historical importance in shaping the band's signature sound, the track was not well-received by the members themselves. In a 1985 interview with Melody Maker, frontman Dave Gahan described it as his ‘least favorite number’, while songwriter Martin Gore stated, ‘I hate it, and I wrote it.’
