Deployable Energy and Hornbeck Offshore partner on maritime nuclear power
Deployable Energy and Hornbeck Offshore have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop maritime nuclear power applications using the Unity Nuclear Battery. Hornbeck Offshore has also made a strategic investment in the Houston-based microreactor developer.
The partnership aims to integrate Deployable Energy’s 1 MWe transportable microreactors into various maritime sectors, including inland waterways, offshore platforms, national security logistics, autonomous vessels, power barges, and floating data centers. The Unity Nuclear Battery is designed for vessel integration rather than requiring ships to be built around the reactor, offering refueling intervals exceeding five years.
A joint working group will focus on vessel integration, licensing, financing, and commercial structures, with an initial emphasis on US applications. The long-term goal is multi-gigawatt deployment over a 10-year period, targeting a 20% reduction in total cost of ownership compared to conventional marine diesel or grid-power alternatives.
