Chile's Arica Region Continues Cerro Chuño Eviction After Court Rejects Stay

The Regional Presidential Delegation of Arica and Parinacota announced that the eviction of residents from Cerro Chuño will proceed as scheduled. Although the Court of Appeals in Arica admitted a protection claim filed by a group of inhabitants, it denied their request for an injunction. Delegate Cristian Sayes Maldonado clarified that admissibility “only means the claim meets legal requirements for processing” and does not constitute a ruling on the merits. Because the court did not grant a non‑innovation order, Resolution Exenta No. 99 remains in force, allowing the government to continue the displacement plan while the case is heard. The authorities said the operation follows President José Antonio Kast’s commitment to recover occupied lands and will be carried out “with strict respect for the law and the court’s resolutions.”
