Deportes Temuco bus accident leaves two dead in Chile

A fatal traffic accident occurred in the La Araucanía Region of Chile when a van collided with a bus transporting youth players from the Deportes Temuco football club. The bus was en route to Concepción for a match against Universidad de Concepción when the collision took place at the northern exit of Temuco.

Two people, a man aged 47 and a woman aged 49, died in the accident. A 13-year-old minor sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Temuco Regional Hospital. While the victims were occupants of the smaller vehicle, Deportes Temuco confirmed that its delegation of youth players and staff are uninjured.

Among the deceased was Víctor Águila, a former professional footballer who played for Rangers de Talca and Deportes Temuco. He is the father of Yerko Águila, a current player for San Marcos de Arica. The Chilean Football Players Association (SIFUP) issued condolences to the Águila family following the tragedy. The Traffic Accident Investigation Section (Siat) of the Carabineros is currently investigating the circumstances of the crash.
