Deportivo Saprissa regains top spot in Apertura Tournament

Deportivo Saprissa has reclaimed the top position in the 2026 Apertura Tournament following a 2-0 victory against Club Sport Herediano. This shift in leadership occurred after Club Sport Cartaginés lost their one-week hold on first place following a narrow defeat to Asociación Deportiva San Carlos.

Cartaginés coach Amarini Villatoro expressed significant frustration regarding the loss, citing defensive lapses during set pieces and missed scoring opportunities as key issues. The team currently sits in second place, three points behind Saprissa. Goalkeeper Kevin Briceño also received a red card during the match.

Saprissa midfielder Mariano Torres commented on the team's success and their return to the top of the standings. While declining to engage in public comparisons with other players, Torres emphasized the importance of maintaining their momentum during the upcoming international break as the club prepares for future domestic and Concacaf Champions Cup qualifying matches.
