Honduras archives impeachment petition as Costa Rica faces judicial and political scrutiny

In Honduras, the National Congress has archived a citizen-led petition to impeach more than 80 deputies. The initiative, which sought to hold lawmakers accountable for decisions regarding agro-industrial, energy, and tourism laws, failed to meet the legal requirement of 3,000 valid signatures. While organizers presented over 12,000 signatures, verification by the National Registry of Persons (RNP) confirmed only 1,710 were valid, leading to the immediate dismissal of the request.

In Costa Rica, several legal and political developments are unfolding. The Supreme Court of Justice has initiated an exhaustive review of rules governing precautionary measures to strengthen defenses against organized crime and public corruption. Simultaneously, Attorney General Carlo Díaz warned that proposed budget cuts for 2027 could lead to a “technical closure” of the Judiciary, potentially aiding organized crime.

On the legislative front, Deputy Fernando Obaldía of the Pueblo Soberano party faces multiple allegations. He has been denounced by two separate individuals for alleged predatory and sexual harassment, as well as workplace harassment. Opposition lawmakers are calling for Obaldía to renounce his parliamentary immunity to face the investigations. Meanwhile, Deputy Sigrid Segura of the Frente Amplio has criticized the government, calling for investigations into political party financing and defending previous institutional challenges made by her party.
