Deputy Javiera Rodríguez files complaint against UC academic

Chilean Deputy Javiera Rodríguez has filed a formal complaint with the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC) against academic Sebastián Gray. The complaint follows a social media post by Gray, a professor at the university’s School of Architecture, in which he commented on a photograph of Rodríguez during the Military Parade with the phrase “una estaca le atraviesa la cabeza” (a stake pierces her head).

Rodríguez characterized the comment as a threat and argued that it transcends legitimate political criticism. She noted that this is not an isolated incident, citing previous disparaging remarks and insults directed at her by Gray. In her communication to the university rector, Rodríguez stated that while she defends academic freedom and the right to hold differing political views, she opposes the repeated use of personal insults and expressions alluding to violence.

The Republican Party has issued a statement supporting Rodríguez and condemning the academic's expressions, asserting that political disagreement should not manifest as references to violence. Rodríguez has also reserved the right to pursue further legal action.
