Deputy Speaker Ruby Kumari Thakur urges dowry victims to seek help
Ruby Kumari Thakur, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has called on victims of dowry-related injustice to contact her directly. Speaking at the inauguration of the second convention and fourth general assembly of Nai Sahayog Sanstha Nepal in Dhalkevar, Dhanusha, Thakur emphasized that both the exchange of dowry and the pressure applied to families to provide it are punishable offenses under the law.
Thakur described the dowry system as a “curse on society” and advocated for collective action to eliminate the practice. She urged families to prioritize the education of daughters over the provision of dowries. Additionally, she called for increased social and political advancement for the Thakur community and emphasized the importance of encouraging education for daughters and daughters-in-law.
