Der Schimmelreiter: Modern drama explores climate change

The modern television adaptation of Theodor Storm’s ‘Der Schimmelreiter’, directed by Francis Meletzky, brings the classic story into a contemporary setting. The drama focuses on Hauke Haien, a visionary who takes on leadership roles in coastal protection following the death of his father-in-law.

As a specialist in coastal defense, Hauke attempts to implement new strategies to combat the effects of climate change. However, his warnings are often dismissed as hysteria by local villagers who prefer to adhere to traditional methods despite the looming environmental threats. Supported by his wife Elke, Hauke seeks to gain political and social traction for his extensive conservation plans.
