Derby selected as headquarters for Great British Railways

The British government has confirmed that Derby will serve as the headquarters for Great British Railways (GBR), a move central to the plan to bring the national rail network under public control. The new headquarters will be located at a brownfield site in the Becketwell regeneration area of Derby city centre.

Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2027, with completion expected by spring 2029. The facility is projected to house up to 450 staff and is estimated to provide a £151 million boost to the regional economy.

In conjunction with the new headquarters, the government announced a rail foundation apprenticeship program. This initiative aims to create up to 600 placements for young people aged 16 to 21 over the next four years, with the initial cohort based in Derby. The full transition of rail operations to public ownership is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
