Derby selected for new Great British Railways headquarters
Derby has been selected as the site for the new Great British Railways (GBR) headquarters. The administrative hub will be located within the Becketwell regeneration area, specifically on the former site of Duckworth Square.
The project involves the construction of an eight-story office complex covering approximately 106,544 square meters. Developed by St James Securities and Peveril Securities, the building is expected to provide direct employment for around 450 people, with the broader project potentially creating up to 1,000 jobs in the region.
The UK government estimates the move will contribute £151 million to the local economy. Additionally, the Department for Transport announced plans to create up to 600 railway infrastructure apprenticeships over the next four years, with the first intake scheduled for Derby.
Construction is tentatively expected to begin in the summer of 2027, with a target completion date in the spring of 2029. However, the timeline remains subject to planning permissions and definitive funding allocations.
